Class Councils Work for the School

Part of a series of posts about the organizations at NHS in which you can get involved.

Looking for a club to join and want to help support your class? Class Council could be a great choice.

The main goal of the four class councils is to raise money for school events. “The tenth graders need help to raise at least $6,000 this year,” said sponsor Dr. Pamela Moore. “The more members we have, the easier it will be to raise the money.” The Sophomore Class Council is responsible for cookie dough and pizza fundraisers as well as hosting a car show later this year. This year they’re also supporting Angel Tree, decorating the walls for Homecoming, and selling spirit wear for the class of 2015.

The Freshman Class Council is sponsored by Mr. Dave Nelson and Ms. Kerri Wildgruber.  “Our biggest thing right now is spirit wear which the kids are really excited about, along with decorating the Homecoming walls,” said Nelson. The freshmen meet during B Lunch on Tuesdays.

The sophomores meet the first and third Tuesday of every month at lunch and after school on the second Tuesday. To be involved in the Sophomore Class Council you must maintain a 2.5 GPA all year, participate in fundraising, attend all meetings, and receive 50 signatures from members of your class, a signature from the class assigned administrator and principal, and six teacher signatures.

The Junior Class Council is sponsored by Ms. Kristen Lowder and meets on Fridays during B Lunch in room 208.This year, the club hopes to raise between $5,000 and $7,000. As in past years, the juniors plan on creating their Homecoming wall again, holding another Talent Show, and conducting a Prom Fashion Show. To be in Junior Class Council, you must meet every week, participate in fundraisers, and spend at least four hours on the Homecoming wall. President Karly Klem leads the meetings and plays an active part in getting others to join. Secretrary Molly Shaffer said, ”it’s a good way to meet new people.”  Shaffer takes the attendance and keeps up on what the class is doing through notes.

Senior year is the most stressful time for class council, but the Senior Class Council has big plans. Senior Vice President Angelica Brown listed some of the major projects they are planning: “We will have several Quarter Auctions, sell food like Joe Corbi’s (Pizzas), and also have a couple car washes, I think, and we will try to sell items to students, like bracelets, which went over well last year.”  With a budget of about $5,000 (mainly for Project Grad), the seniors have a lot of work to do.

Senior President Olivia Reilly has taken steps in order to make this a successful year.  Sponsor Mrs. Adrienne Forgette stated, “Olivia is very excited about this year. She attended a leadership program at Washington College over the summer which should help her even more with leading our big group.” Reilly wants to emphasize the importance of each member’s opinion and use them effectively. “We plan to make and win the Homecoming wall contest (hands down), the Mr.Patriot Pageant, [and] Project Grad,” she said. Interested seniors can pick up an application from Mrs. Forgette in room 204. The club meets during B Lunch on Wednesdays in room 204.
