On Saturday, September 7, Northern varsity football faced their county rival, Huntingtown High School in the season opener at Huntingtown. The game was action packed and intense with fans from both sides of the field chanting and cheering on their teams from the moment it started.  Northern fans were covered in red to show their support, but in the end the Patriots took a tough overtime loss against the Hurricanes.

The boys have had long, hard practices with new head coach, Mr. Darren DeMeio, to prepare for the game. senior Captain Austin Howard said, “We have been preparing for this game since August 1. Our main goal is to beat Huntingtown this year.” DeMeio has made changes to the way the boys practice and their form. “We have a new offense. We are more spread out on the line,” said senior Captain Adam Swann. “it will help us win our games.”

Northern started the game with a touchdown right away in the first quarter making the score 7-0. Huntingtown tried catching up, but only managed to make the score 7-3 in the second quarter giving Northern the lead. It wasn’t long before Huntingtown actually caught up and had the lead by a score of 10-7.  The game started heating up when both teams started to score and went back and forth with who was leading the game.  By the fourth quarter, time was winding down and Northern was losing 27-13. “The game was really exciting. I was cheering on the boys the whole time.  I was disappointed after the game when Northern lost, but I know we will win next time,” said senior Shaylah Sullivan.

In the last minute of the game, Northern fans were biting their nails in hopes the boys could pull something together and score more points. The boys were able to tie the game 27-27 in the last 25 seconds with a touchdown. Unfortunately, during the extra point attempt, the holder lost the ball preventing the kicker from making the winning point. The game went on into overtime as Northern and Huntingtown went head to head trying to get the first touchdown. Huntingtown was able to get into the end zone first as Northern lost 34-27.We did a very good job,” said DeMeio, “but it was a tough way to lose.”
