As the school year comes to a close, the Northern cheer and poms 2013 season is just beginning. In the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC), cheer and poms are both only considered club’s, not official sports.  They can have tryouts whenever they please. Throughout the conference, both teams have early tryouts so members can attend summer camps to teach and prepare the girls for the fall season.

“We can bond more as a team, and early practices will prepare us for a better camp and season,” said sophomore Anna King. Since teams have been set, the varsity cheerleading team has had many team bonding events including attending spring sporting events as a team and a Rita’s fundraiser night, on May 15..  This has allowed the girls to become closer since they have until mid-November together. The team will attend National Cheerleader’s Association camp July 24-27 at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland.

The Poms team ended their 2012-2013 season in April, giving the underclassmen a very short break. Their tryouts were held May 15-17 for the 2013-2104 school year. “I wish they would’ve waited a little longer so we could rest a little more because the season is so long,” said junior Molly Schaffer. The team participates in a summer camp, preforms at halftime of the varsity football and basketball games, and attends competitions in the spring.

The Northern Cheer and Poms teams hope the early tryouts can give them a bit of an edge while competing and preforming at camp and throughout their season.
