When Safe Haven opened in theatres back on Valentine’s Day, some viewers felt it was repetetive, cheap and ridiculous, while others found it a great, suspenseful love story. Now on DVD and Blu-Ray, the film, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, had many wishing they’d stayed home for Valentine’s Day to watch The Notebook again. On the small screen, though, it should play better.

Julianne Hough plays a lonely young mother with a hidden past she’s trying to escape from. Her abusive husband is also a cop making it hard for her to walk away from him. When she gets the chance, she escapes to a quiet town where she avoids making friends with many people. There, she meets Alex (Josh Duhamel) and gets him mixed up in her life. A unique twist at the end proves there were forces guiding her to her destiny.

If you’re into sappy, suprising love stories you may find this one good for you. It includes some pretty risque scenes, is rated PG-13 and is definitely not for anyone younger than 13 or 14. The suprise ending and other twists throughout the film are the best parts. You may want to bring a tissue or two. Grade: B
