The spring musical, Damn Yankees, will be this weekend in the Mary Harrison Center. It premieres Friday at 7 p.m., with two more performances Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The plot of the show is as follows: Protaganist Joe Boyd (senior James Scheffler) is a baseball fanatic. He is devoted to the Washington Senators, a horrible and pathetic baseball team. After another disappointing loss, Mr. Applegate (senior Ryan Myers) appears in front of Joe. Applegate proposes a deal: if Joe gives up his soul, he will be transformed into the amazing baseball player the Senators need to win. He accepts, and has only one opportunity to return to his normal life. But will he return to his normal life or continue his life as a star?

Other leads include senior Kelly Hutchinson as Lola, junior Anna Elkins as Meg Boyd, junior David Kunz as Benny Van Buren, senior Jimmy Fagan as Smokey, and sophomore Randi Wright as Gloria.

Invisible Children Sleepout

Twenty students and five teachers came out of their warm and cozy homes on April1 to sleep on the cold ground outside Northern. This fundraiser was hosted and run by the Invisible Children organization in support of Habitat For Humanity. It was intended to raise awareness of poverty and genocide cases all around the globe.

Paticipant Alia O’Kane stated, “It was an amazing experiece, and I had a lot of fun staying up all night with the others.” Alia and others brought boxes to sleep in and act as their home and bed for the night. Sponsor Ms. Adriene LaGier is hoping to expand the fundraiser to more students and staff next year.

GSA Day of Silence Friday

On Friday, April 15, you might notice that many of the students at Northern High School will be silent. Those participating in the Day of Silence are taking a stand against the bullying of homosexual teens. Bullying has been a serious problem across the country and is believed to have contributed to a number of suicides.

Members of Northern’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) have recognized this as a problem and have made a pact to be silent for an entire day. “It’s gonna be hard. I’m gonna have to do sign language or something to talk to people,” said senior Thomas Charles. By staying silent for the entire day, the students participating hope to create awareness of the problem. “I think that people should be aware of bullying [because of sexual orientation] because it has been the cause of death of many innocent teens. Unlike other people, I’m proud of who I am and if you don’t like it, keep it to yourselves,” said junior Katheran Resler. Recently there have been major news about students committing suicide as a result of bullying. If you see bullying going on, report it to administrators.
