New Movies in Theatres This Weekend

Valentine’s weekend was a big one for new movies at the box office. We sent our writers to take a look at six new films that are in theatres now.

Just Go With It

just-go-with-it-movie-poster-550x815Just Go With It is a new film starring Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, and major new hottie Brooklyn Decker.  Sandler plays Danny, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon whose heart is broken just before his wedding.  Instead of getting married, he finds attractive women, convinces them that he’s in a terrible marriage, and gets the girls to feel sorry for him, then leaves them when he gets tired of the relationship.

One day, he meets a gorgeous girl (Decker) whom he falls for. He has to keep up his matrimonial lie so he can keep seeing her.  Aniston, who plays Danny’s office assistant, aids him in this farce by pretending to be his wife.  Her kids end up pretending to be Danny’s kids.  One lie leads to another, and so on and so forth.

The movie is decently funny, but neither Sandler nor Aniston really steals the show.   In smaller parts, Nick Swardson, Nicole Kidman and Dave Matthews make funny appearances along the way. The ending is far too easy to predict – just by watching the trailer you can figure it out.  The movie isn’t terrible, so maybe wait until it comes out on DVD, unless you really love Adam Sandler. Never Say Never

never-say-never-posterNever Say Never, the story of teen sensation Justin Bieber’s rise to fame, is an inspirational movie. It follows his childhood in Stratford, Ontario, and how he used the internet to reach levels of superstardom.

The climax of the movie is a sold out show at Madison Square Gardens in New York. Never Say Never is also available in 3D, which adds to the movie’s overall thrill. The movie is almost two hours long, but the audience never grows uninterested. That is probably due to the star studded cast including Miley Cyrus, Usher, Jaden Smith and Snoop Dog.

Bieber’s rise to fame is an inspirational story, and leaves most people in the theater satisfied. It’s one of the most interesting documentaries in a while. The extra money to see it in 3D is definitely worth it, so if you get a chance, be sure to catch Never Say Never this weekend. Grade A

Gnomeo and Juliet

gnomeo-posterGnomeo and Juliet is a great new animated film for kids, teenagers and adults alike who won’t stop laughing. The characters are creative and funny. Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this movie puts a twist on a classic as the red and the blue gnomes are engaged in a feud that has gone on for many years. Neither side will back down when there’s a chance to fight.

When gnomes named Gnomeo and Juliet leave their yards and meet, they feel an instant connection. They have to fight a battle with their families so they can be together. The movie is creative and funny. It’s a true family movie. Grade: A

The Eagle

eagle-posterSince the trailer for the new movie, The Eagle, hit theatres, people have been anxious to see it.  The trailer made it look like an action packed movie with intense fighting scenes and suspense. The result is not a bad movie in which you can’t wait until the next fight or the next action scene.  Channing Tatum is a good fit for the role of the main character, Marcus, an angry young Roman soldier. He does a good job portraying a bloodied up guy with a big heart.

Set during the Roman Empire, The Eagle, has you guessing what’s going to happen next.  It keeps you thinking you the whole time.  If a movie doesn’t hold your attention, it’s not for you.  The Eagle keeps you interested the whole time.  It’s a good movie with a lot of action and romance. Grade: B+

Sanctum

sanctum-poster1James Cameron got the job done and some in his newest 3D movie, Sanctum. The film lives up all the hype about how it would compare to Avatar. In this visually stunning thriller, a cave exploration turns into disaster when a cyclone hits above causing the cave to flood.

A cave exploring legend, his son and his crew, all played by actors you’ve never heard of, must push on through the mysterious series of caves where no man has ever been before. They have to find an exit somewhere in the huge underground tunnels. They have limited supplies and not a lot of time.

That makes the movie very exciting. You never expect what will happen next, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole movie. Sanctum is another great picture produced by James Cameron and directed by Alister Grierson. Grade: B+

The Roommate

the-roommate-poster-1Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, and Alyson Michalka are just some of the stars in the new horror flick, The Roommate. The film is a thriller about a girl who goes away to college named Sara (Kelly) who is assigned to a new dorm. Her new roommate, Rebecca (Meester) seems nice at first, but changes throughout the movie.Rebecca starts to look likee Sara and obsess about her. She even gets the same tattoo Sara has.

The film takes place at a college in Los Angeles. In the movie, Sara loses a sister she was very close to. Rebecca isn’t taking her medicine which could be the reason she is obsessed with Sara. While The Roommate has some chills, you can probably wait for it to come out on DVD. Grade: C
