Review: True Beauty

true-beauty1Last month, ABC premiered a new reality show contest called True Beauty. The contestants, a typical mix of D-List wannabes were told that they’re competing for a spokesmodeling job on a show called “The Face of Vegas.” While looks do count in the competition, the contestants don’t know they are also being judged for their “inner beauty.”

They are being watched by hidden camera to see if they make good character choices in staged situations, for example, do they stop an intoxicated man from getting behind the wheel, even though they don’t know him? The winner is to have the perfect mix of inner and outer beauty. How corny.

Howard Stern’s wife, Beth Ostrosky, is one of the show’s hosts, along with has-been MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo. The show has good potential for guilty pleasure status, but the competitors are rather forgettable and the secret tests aren’t even very clever. It seems as though ABC was out of ideas for a new show. You can catch it Mondays at 10 after The Bachelorette on ABC, but don’t. Grade: D
